This is the entrance to the secondary school where Mike teaches and the kids attend classes. There are brick walls extending from both sides. That is how most of the streets of La Haucana are. Modest, sometimes almost no visible sign of a dwelling. The streets are lined with concrete walls with cobble-stone streets in the center. People's homes are well secured with concrete walls and gates. There is no such thing as a front yard in La Huacana. You step off the street into a house or place of business. Most often they are one in the same. Most residents operate small businesses from their homes, either living deeper inside or on top. The back yards, however, are quiet extensive. Homes often open up to their courtyards, not sure of where the house stops and the yard begins. We saw one home have the entire kitchen out-of-doors and bedrooms are outside as well.
